Monthly Reads: September 2021

 Hello!

September has been slowly pulling me back into my old routines and trying to maintain a balance between my workflow and creative flows! but more importantly, it had got me out of the slump zone, and managing to get some reading - so here are my September reads!

Poisoned by Jennifer Donnelly

Categories: Fiction, Fairytales, Young Adult, & Retellings.

Once upon a time, a girl named Sophie rode into the forest with the queen’s huntsman. Her lips were the color of ripe cherries, her skin as soft as new-fallen snow, her hair as dark as midnight. When they stopped to rest, the huntsman pulled out his knife … and took Sophie’s heart.’

I enjoy reading this dark and twisted version of Snow white - even tho, it’s fantasy it has some realness to it. the beginning had me hyped and existed throughout the chapters - although, the ending left me a bit disappointed like it seems like everything is falling to their places on their own without any effects of it.

⭐4.5/5; Sure, it’s just as feminist and female-empowering but honestly (in my opinion), I did not think that this is only the morale takeaway from the whole story.

Through the Looking Glass (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland #2) by Lewis Carroll

Categories: Fiction, Fairytales, Young Adult, & Classics.

‘In Carroll’s sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Alice once again finds herself in a bizarre and nonsensical place when she passes through a mirror and enters a looking-glass world where nothing is quite as it seems. From her guest appearance as a pawn in a chess match to her meeting with Humpty Dumpty, Through the Looking Glass follows Alice on her curious adventure and shows Carroll’s great skill at creating an imaginary world full of the fantastical and extraordinary.’

I have watched the movie adaptation but not read the book before - but it somehow feels as nostalgic as I have read before.

“When I use a word,” Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.”

Enjoyed how it’s written in a more advanced language than grade-one-level readings

⭐4.5/5; it brings so many childhood memories!

I have tried my best to get more reads as my TBR grows but it still progresses even if I read one chapter each day!
