Monthly Reads: June 2021

Hello! And hello to summer vacation!

June was the most hectic month for me as I had limited time for myself to read or even draw.

Let’s dive into this monthly read!

I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai & Christina Lamb

Categories: Non-Fiction, Memoir, Autobiography.

“When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education.

I Am Malala is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls’ education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.”

*Might contain light spoiler*

*read with caution*

This book reminded me that I take a few things in my life for granted and should appreciate every little thing in our daily life.

“I was a girl in a land where rifles are fired in celebration of a son, while daughters are hidden away behind a curtain, their role in life simply to prepare food and give birth to children.”

I could empathize and understand to a certain degree as growing up in the Middle East and in a strict society where honor matters more than their sister/daughter’s life. Although I didn’t have my childhood here - my teenage years here were a struggle but can not be compared to Malala’s, understanding it made it clear and not okay and not normal.

⭐3.5/5; however, I did not like the writing style - it did not get me as intrigued as anticipated while reading.

This was full of final assignments and final exams - but it’s finished and it’s a vacation now!

Thank you for reading and please stay safe, readers!

Yours truly, Hessa <3
