Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, everyone!
For those past two months, I haven’t been able to read enough but managed to at least read one each month due to assignments and finals (wishfully hoping to pass all of my courses!). In November, I read:
If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio
Categories: Adult, Contemporary, Mystery, Thriller Crime, and LGBT.
‘Oliver Marks has just served ten years in jail - for a murder he may or may not have committed. On the day he’s released, he’s greeted by the man who put him in prison. Detective Colborne is retiring, but before he does, he wants to know what really happened a decade ago.’
The storyline was on point, character development was on a constant change with the story progressing. and the 'almost-love’ triangle was so nerve-wracking as the expected ending unfold.
⭐4/5; it got boring at some parts as the story goes on but overall, it was an excellent novel!
⛄
and my December read is:
The Soul Of A Woman by Isabel Allende
Categories: Non-fiction, Essays, Autobiography, Feminism.
“When I say that I was a feminist in kindergarten, I am not exaggerating,” begins Isabel Allende. As a child, she watched her mother, abandoned by her husband, provide for her three small children without “resources or voice.” Isabel became a fierce and defiant little girl, determined to fight for the life her mother couldn’t have.
So what do women want? To be safe, to be valued, to live in peace, to have their own resources, to be connected, to have control over their bodies and lives, and above all, to be loved. On all these fronts, there is much work to be done, and this book, Allende hopes, will “light the torch of our daughters and granddaughters with mine. They will have to live for us, as we lived for our mothers, and carry on with the work still left to be finished.”
This got me as more of a feminist novel instead of a memoir that mainly focuses on social movement, justice, etc. though, I have not got any other Isabel’s books - She wrote this in a life lived in a different time although some relatable topics. This is an interesting read as it reflects the lessons on women and life in this world today
⭐3.5/5; in some parts of the book it felt that some were repeated as filler and it got boring.
