Caraval Series - Book Review

Categories: Fiction, Young Adult, Mystery, and Adventure.

‘Whatever you’ve heard about Caraval, it doesn’t compare to reality. It’s more than just a game or a performance. It’s the closest you’ll ever find to magic in this world…

Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.’

Welcome, welcome to Caraval … beware of getting swept too far away.

Firstly, let me say that this series is EVERYTHING THAT I NEVER KNEW I NEEDED in my life, and am not emotionally ready to move on! Feelings, dreams, and thoughts are played with while reading. A captivating yet nerve-racking story that kept growing and expanding. Before reading this series, I have set my expectations as low as possible BUT IT LITERALLY BROKE ME!!

The first book starts from Scarlett's or ‘Crimson’ as Julian likes to call her (which melts my tiny broken heart) perspective and follows after her self-discover herself again being making decisions at the moment without second-guessing in order to win the game.

The second book is from Donatell’s perspective as the sisters’ story leads into the second game of Caraval but this time is asking more than just looking for someone. This book follows Tella to self-discovery and learns more about the Fates that had the people of Valenda.

And the last book is from both sisters’ eyes and perspectives. This book the one broke me into a mess of emotions and the ending was so expected but I did also expected it to end differently (you know what I mean?).

After finishing the series - I was emotionally not even ready to close it and move on to the next.

I felt I was still there inside the book and when I did move on, I listened to Fall Out Boys’ immortals, centuries, and irresistible - THEY TOOK ME BACK TO JACKS, LEGENDS, AND TELLA!

I mean how Tella loved Legend and played with Jack’s BEATING HEART! (and I kinda wish I had all the matching covers but now currently searching for the Deck of Destiny.)

However, the rating of this read is 5/5⭐️; I want to live in the book!

I highly recommend this series as it will be broken and fix you only to break it again.

P.S.

Here’s a fanart sketch of the trio (Tella, Jacks, and Legend).
